In other words, it is an underwater tunnel where the ships sail on the top and the cars travel underneath it. Traffic jams can be avoided because cars no longer have to wait for boats to pass by anymore. This bridge is commonly known as the “upside down bridge,“ for obvious reasons.
I love taking trains here. They are so easy. I used to ride the train from Chicago to Bloomington, IL when I was in college, and I thought it was such a fun experience. I loved being able to sit back and read a book or just look out the window. In the Netherlands, it is very much the same. The only hard part is getting on the trains when I have really big suitcases with me, but otherwise, it's so much fun. People even come through the train selling snacks and drinks, which is great when you really want some chocolate! Sometimes it can be a little confusing because you might have to switch trains, but the great thing is that there is a phone app for the local train system that you can use that will tell you exactly where you need to go!
Trains are a huge part of the culture in the Netherlands. People take trains to work every morning if they live in a different city from where they work. But more so, on the weekends, you see teenagers, older adults, and every age in between, riding the trains all over the country. If you're planning a weekend trip to Amsterdam, you will be on the train for two or three hours. It's always fun to see people settle in, pull out their snacks and gossip and tell stories for their entire train ride.
