Moving Around Valparaíso: Chaos on Wheels

The Ascensor and trolley systems are also very much a part of the culture in Valparaíso. These are considered part of the heritage of the city and are part of why the city is so famous. These old systems allowed Valparaíso to develop in the way it did with crazy houses stretching up into the hills along narrow cobbled roads, winding haphazardly in every direction. The city was not planned for cars and is not composed of square blocks like most U.S. cities. Instead, it feels like it naturally grew out of the hillside and the many varied public transportation systems allowed this to happen.
