Moving Around Valparaíso: Chaos on Wheels

Another part of the old city's public transportation is a system of electronic trolleys that are very old and considered part of the heritage of the city. The trolleys are a more calm way of moving about as they stop at defined locations and move at a reasonable speed. Some of these trolleys seem like they are well over a hundred years old, covered in dents and full of antique well-worn wood.

The most popular, and a more modern form of transportation, is a crazy network of small buses called Micros. The Micros are also famous in Valparaiso but more for driving extremely fast and erratically through the streets. The drivers are paid per customer, so they are constantly weaving in and out of traffic or going at insane speeds to reach the next location. There are no stops for Micros, but rather, you raise your hand and try to convince a bus flying by to throw on the brakes and skid to a stop in front of you. This said, if you need to get somewhere fast, then a Micro is the way to go.

Additionally, there is a network of shared taxis called Collectivos. I have not yet figured out how to use the Collectivos as I don't understand how to know where they are going. Finally, there is a very modern metro that runs along the coast. The metro is quite fun as there are often musical performers that set up in each train car and play music during the ride. I have seen some absolutely excellent guitar players, singers and even a rapper who was telling quick jokes while playing a bongo drum!

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

I am rapidly starting to love the transportation systems of Valparaíso.
