That's right, it's not uncommon to enter the grocery store for a few things and end up with a nice complimentary concert.
The most fun activity this week was when I saw a live stand-up comedy act in a park. Every weekend, the barrio (neighborhood) San Antonio in Cali has cuenteros (storytellers) who set up a spot in this big public park to do their show. The performer asked for a lot of audience participation and it was funny to see people surprised when they were asked to come up. It was also really nice to see this local tradition that doesn't exist where I'm from, where strangers come together to enjoy a show in the park.
This week I decided something was missing from my life: a novel. I'm usually reading a novel and I realized I hadn't read for fun since arriving in Colombia. I wanted to work on my Spanish reading comprehension, so I searched the shelves at my university library until I encountered the name of an author I'd been recommended before: Junot Diaz. I was immediately sucked into the story and have been reading during every spare second I have!
Three days a week from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. I go to a fitness class at my university called atletismo (athletics). The trainer, who we call “profe,” puts a list of exercises on the whiteboard and we go down the list of different cardio and strength training exercises. This week he made the joke that since it was “cold” he needed to have us work extra hard to warm up.
