On Shaky Ground: How to Live with the Risk of Natural Disasters

The position and movement of these plates causes El Salvador to be a bit more geologically (related to the rocks that make up everything under our feet) unstable than other areas of the world, like the northeastern U.S. where New York is located.

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

Despite being a tiny country, El Salvador's natural environments are very diverse. The country has elevations ranging from sea level to about 2,000 meters above sea level (Do you know how tall that is in feet? Here's a hint, there are about 3.3 feet in every meter). These elevations allow for various different growing regions where a wide range of crops can be grown, from apples in Chalatenango to corn in the flat planes of Cabañas to coffee in the highlands of Ahuachapán. Volcanic soil also gives crops the nutrients they need to flourish here whereas they would struggle to live elsewhere.

El Salvador wouldn't have all of these different growing environments if it weren't for the collision of these tectonic plates so long ago. The geological activity and instability of this region has brought ecological diversity to El Salvador. Salvadorans use this diversity to sustain their own country and also to make money by exporting many goods to other countries.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

El Salvador has had many earthquakes and eruptions in the past, destroying parts of the country and killing many. The Volcán Chaparrastique in San Miguel and the Lago Ilopango (this lake is the crater of a "buried" volcano) have the potential to wipe out cities or even parts of the country if they erupt.
