Eating All the Seafood You Can Imagine

The fish and chips dish has been eaten in Australia ever since British people started settling here hundreds of years ago. The salmon sushi originates from Japan. Lastly, the fish taco from the food truck was a blend of Mexican and Chinese influences.

How is the food prepared?:

Sushi is made of raw fish, so there isn't that much preparation needed, except for cooking the rice.

Both the fish taco and the fish and chips are made of fried cod. The chef puts the raw cod fish in egg, flour and milk coating, and then fries it in hot oil. That is how it comes out crunchy on the outside and well-cooked on the inside.

Is this food connected to the local environment? How?:

Fish, and seafood in general, is really important to Australian culture. The country is known for its seafood because Australia is an island country that has a lot of marine life around it.

Every morning at the Sydney Fish Market, chefs from all across the state of New South Wales - the state which Sydney is based in - come to buy fresh fish. Since the market is right next to the city, a lot of restaurants in Sydney serve fresh seafood to their customers. Australia also sells a lot of seafood to nearby countries. They sell lobsters and oysters to Vietnam, Singapore and China every year. There is a lot of seafood available here to eat and sell, but it's important that we don't take all of them so that we can make sure that Australians have enough fish to eat in the future.
