Helping the Elderly

Introduction:

South Korea has become one of the world's most advanced countries in a very short amount of time. In the 1950s and the 1960s, Korean citizens worked together to create a better country than the one that had been destroyed by many years of war. The generations that helped improve South Korea in the '50s and the '60s are now elderly people and they experience many hardships.

What community need did I learn about?:

Every Friday I volunteer at a senior center and I help senior citizens practice English. The senior citizens have also taught me a lot of about Korean culture and society. I have learned how South Korea is becoming an "aged society." This means that almost more than 14% of the South Korean population is over the age of 65. This has caused problems for South Koreans because a lot of senior citizens can't work and they end up having to live in poor conditions.

Why does the community have this need?:

South Korea has become an aged society sooner than expected, so it has been difficult to help every senior citizen in need. It's very expensive to live in the city of Seoul, so many senior citizens struggle to get by every day. A lot of South Korean senior citizens helped turn South Korea into the advanced country it is today, but they weren't able to save up money.
