Hej from Copenhagen!

Introduction:

My Danish teacher, Nina, always tells the best stories about life in Copenhagen. But I wanted to hear it straight from the source! So one sunny afternoon, I sat down with her daughter with a list of questions and a shared bag of delicious pastries from Lagkagehuset. With her bike helmet still on the floor beside us, this bright and chatty 10-year-old gave me the real inside scoop on what it’s like to be a kid in Denmark.

What do you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?:

For breakfast, I usually have rugbrød, which is this dark, dense rye bread, with cheese or salami on top. Or sometimes just oatmeal. For lunch, we almost always have a madpakke. It's a lunchbox from home with more rugbrød or rolls with cold cuts. We eat it at school. Dinner is a warm meal with my family. My favorite is kødboller (meatballs) with potatoes and gravy, or maybe a taco Friday, which is really popular here.

What is your house like?:

We live in an apartment, not a house. It's in a big, old building with a cool, winding staircase. We have big windows to let in the light, but they're not too big. My sister and I share a room, which is okay most of the time.

What chores do you have at home?:

I have to set the table for dinner, take out the recycling (we have to sort everything!), and keep my room tidy.
