The Dead Sea, Jordan's saltiest place

It is used in many health treatments to make your skin better, and the mud is also used for treatments since it contains lots of natural vitamins. This is why people choose to cover themselves in Dead Sea mud before washing it off. For example, that is why I covered myself with Dead Sea mud when I visited the lake!

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

The Dead Sea is in a very hot and dry part of Jordan. The temperature, here, in the summer can be over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and there are not many places suitable for farming close by. Also, there is no life in the Dead Sea, so nothing can grow in this area! For these reasons, people who live near the Dead Sea sometimes need to go to different places to get food and water.

Another challenge is that the Dead Sea itself is shrinking. Due of global warming, the lake has shrunk very fast. It is also getting smaller because the Jordanian government has changed the flow of the Jordan River. More water used to go to the Dead Sea, but now more water goes to the north of the country for growing food. There is very little water in Jordan, so people need to make tough choices about where it ends up.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

A lot of hotels and resorts have been developed next to the Dead Sea. The beautiful views, and the health benefits of the salt and mud, have convinced a lot of people to explore the region as tourists. Many stores also sell Dead Sea mud and salt. You can even find these products in the United States if you look for them!
