It was fun to eat with my hands, and I didn't have to worry about being messy because I was outside. My favorite food was the lumpia because it was crunchy, and I used a sour vinegar dipping sauce for flavor. Not only was the food delicious, but I felt so happy sharing a meal with my friends and host family. We shared smiles in nature.
For boodle fights, the feast is typically prepared at home and then transported to the location of the celebration. One of the most important parts of a boodle fight is the rice, of which there is generally a lot. In the Philippines, rice is served with every meal, and boodle fights are no exception! Multiple huge pots of rice were cooked and packaged in tupperware to transport to our boodle fight. For my favorite dish, the lumpia, we first made a stuffing that included pork and chopped vegetables. Then we wrapped small portions of the filling in a round rice paper and rolled these up and fried them. The fish was bought fresh from the market and cooked over a grill by the riverbank.
The most important part of the food preparation for a boodle fight is how the food is presented. Rice is spread out over the entire table. Grilled meat, vegetables, and snacks are spread around the rice. You can't help but feel close to your family and friends as you reach around each other for your desired dishes and pass around the sauces and dips.
