A Filipino Boodle Fight

Introduction:

Filipinos love food, and that's a fact! In the Philippines, I eat breakfast, a morning meryenda (snack), then lunch, an afternoon meryenda and dinner. Meals are a time for families and friends to come together. People in the Philippines place a big importance on food, and they give you food to welcome and care for you.

Boodle fights are an example of the importance of food. They originated in the military to bring members together. Now, families or friends will set up boodle fights for special celebrations to inspire closeness and belonging. A Boodle is like a Fourth of July BBQ or a potluck, where everyone eats food around the same table.

What food did I try?:

With my friend Sera, and her host pamilya (family) we had a boodle fight for a family member's birthday. The feast included a lot of rice, lumpia - which is like a fried egg roll with meat and vegetables - fish, and okra. It was masarap (delicious)!

How did I feel when I tried it?:

The birthday celebration was at a nearby river. After swimming in the river, we set up the tables with banana leaves like tablecloths. We squatted around the table along the river rocks and were so hungry from swimming!
