Our News

What main languages are spoken here?:

There are 25 different languages spoken in Guatemala (remember, in a country only a little bit bigger than Ohio). Of these 25, there are 22 Mayan languages, Xinca (another indigenous ethnic group), Garifuna (descendants of African shipwreck survivors!) and Spanish.

I live in the mountains of Totonicapán, in a village called Llano de Los Tuices (Plain of the singing birds). Down in the cities, most people speak Spanish, but up here in the villages, many people speak a Mayan language. In this region, K'iche' and Mam are the most common, with about 1 million (1,000,000) and 500,000 speakers, respectfully. For comparison, 1.5 Billion (1,500,000,000) people speak English worldwide!

What type of money is used here?:

The money used in Guatemala is named after their national bird, the beautiful red and green quetzal. Vibrant and shy, you'll have to hike into the cloud forests of Sololá or Alta Verapaz to catch a glimpse of one.

Quetzales are plentiful as a currency, though! Many of the bills and coins are adorned with their namesake bird. There are about 7.78 Quetzales in $1.00 USD.

How much does a bottle of water cost?:

A bottle of water costs from three (3) to seven (7) Quetzales, depending on the brand, size and store.
