The Poppy in London

The flower is found in a range of soils, but it is most frequently found in calcareous (chalky) soils. It is pollinated by insects, particularly bumblebees!

How does it use its environment to survive?:

The plant needs rich soil to survive. Poppy seeds are rich in oil,  and protein. Since the 1900s ,the oil it produces has often been used as cooking oil or in products such as margarine. Poppy oil or seeds can also be added as spices for cakes or breads.

What can harm this creature or plant? Are we worried about it?:

The plant that you see in these photos can cause no harm. It is quite signficant because it represents peace and remebrance to the Veterans in the Armed Forces! The poppy flower was discovered by the people of Western and Central Europe between 6000 and 3500 BC. The opium poppy, a different form of the plant, is used as the basis for creating opioid drugs, which sometimes gives the plant a bad name.  The small red field flower, however, is harmless!
