In Donegal, farmers often raise a specific breed of sheep called the Scottish Blackface Sheep. They are very hardy animals. This means they can survive in difficult conditions, like living on a mountain! Farmers herd their sheep using sheepdogs who run long distances to find all the sheep and bring them together so they can move them to a different place.
The Scottish Blackface Sheep is just how the name sounds: a sheep with a black face and white body! Male sheep have horns and are called rams. The females do not have horns, and they are called ewes. Each sheep on the mountain is painted with a specific dye. That dye tells all the farmers nearby whose sheep it is. The farmer we talked to said his sheep have a purple shoulder.
When I first saw sheep, they were in the middle of the road. I wanted to laugh! I had never seen that before and thought it was funny that sheep rule the roads in rural Ireland. The sheep look like little clouds running around!
