Into the Life of Aishwarya

Aishwarya is required to wear a simple uniform of a particular shirt and pants to school each day. She enjoys wearing uniforms because she knows that she will most likely not have the opportunity to wear a uniform after she graduates from school, so she wants to savor the opportunity while it lasts!

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

Roopa packs Aishwarya's lunch at home, and then she eats it at school. Roopa packs South Indian food, such as puliyodarai (pronounced pull-ee-yo-dhu-rey), a type of seasoned rice with a sour taste, and poori (pronounced poo-ree), a type of puffed bread. Aishwarya's favorite food is dosa, which is my favorite South Indian dish as well!

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

Aishwarya attends an "English medium" school, so all of the students and teachers speak English. In addition to Hindi and Kannada, Aishwarya also speaks Nepali because her family originated in Nepal and later traveled to South India. Kannada is the local language spoken in Bangalore, and "Namaskara" (pronounced Num-ah-scar-ah) is the word for "Hello."

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

Chendu, Harshini, Pavani, Nisha and Niharika are common names.

What subjects do you study in school, and which one is your favorite?:

Aishwarya studies math, science, social studies, Kannada, Hindi and English at school. Science and social studies are her favorite subjects. Kannada and Hindi are more difficult for her.
