Creating Community Through Public Green Spaces in Bonn

Because of this, residents rely on designated public parks for access to nature. Additionally, Bonn’s location along the Rhine River makes outdoor life an important part of the city’s identity. People regularly gather along the river for recreation and social events. Without organized and protected green spaces, these opportunities for connection and relaxation would be reduced.

Is this need being met? How?:

This need is being met through intentional long-term planning and national programs such as the Bundesgartenschau, which encourages cities to redesign and invest in green infrastructure. Bonn hosted the exhibition in 1979, and one lasting result was the development of the Freizeit Park Rheinaue (which translates to Free Time Park on the Rhine), a large riverside park that continues to serve the community today. The park includes wide walking and biking paths, open lawns, gardens, playgrounds, and event spaces. It is free to access and well maintained, making it available to all residents regardless of income or background. Through planning, maintenance, and public investment, Bonn demonstrates how a community can meet the shared need for connection, recreation and environmental balance.
