Community Feasts in Lesotho

Introduction:

In Lesotho, community feasts are an important tradition. They celebrate weddings, funerals, holidays and other gatherings. These events bring people together, strengthen relationships and honor local customs. Much of the food is grown or sourced locally, showing a strong connection between the community and its environment.

What tradition did I learn about?:

This week, I’m sharing with you all the tradition of community feasts in Lesotho!

Why does the community have this tradition?:

In Lesotho, communities host feasts for many different reasons. Sometimes they are held for weddings, funerals, holidays or oter community celebrations. And sometimes feasts are held just for the chance for friends, families and neighbors to get together, eat good food, dance and enjoy each other's company.

During feasts, people will often slaughter an animal such as a cow, pig, sheep or goat. Then, they will cook together all day before hosting the feast in the evening. Sometimes, people will even wake up before the sun is out to begin preparing for the celebration! Food is usually cooked outside in very big pots that can feed many people.

Once the food is served and everyone has eaten, you can hear local music being played on speakers, and many people will celebrate the occasion by singing, dancing, storytelling and chatting.
