There is nowhere else in the world like the Tibetan Plateau. It is both the world's highest and largest plateau. The environment of the Tibetan Plateau is very unique. The animals that live here are also unique. Species on the Tibetan Plateau adapt to low oxygen, cold, harsh weather and difficult terrain. Animals that can be found here include the woolly hare, marmot, pika, chukar partridge, blue sheep, Tibetan gazelle, Tibetan brown bears and of course the snow leopard. But the snow leopard isn't the only carnivore living on the Tibetan Plateau. There are also common leopards, Eurasian lynx, Tibetan foxes and Tibetan wolves.
Carnivores are meat eaters that consume other animals. They are very important to their habitat because eating smaller animals helps control population numbers. This helps to maintain healthy balanced ecosystems. Snow leopards are a species that does this, but I have yet to see one eating in action. However, one carnivore we often see during our sampling for snow leopard scat is the Tibetan wolf.
