Getting Around in Bilbao

Introduction:

This past weekend, I traveled to Bilbao. Located in northern Spain, it is the tenth-largest city and is well known for its culture, food and architecture. While there, I visited the Guggenheim Museum, viewed Bilbao from an observation deck called the Artxanda (pronounced Art-shan-da), walked along the Nervión river and tried lots of pinxtos (pronounced peen-chos), which are Basque tapas.

How do people get around?:

While in Bilbao, I got around by walking and by taking the Mount Artxanda funicular, which is a three-minute railway train that gets you from the bottom of Bilbao to the top of Mount Artxanda.

If you don’t want to walk while in Bilbao, then you can take the public bus (BilboBus), a tram (Euskotren), underground trains (Metro Bilbao) or charter buses that connect Bilbao with the outskirts of the city. People also get around by driving cars or motorcycles, taking a taxi or renting a city bike through an app called Bilbaobizi.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

Walking is by far my most favorite way of getting around here. I love it because it gives me the chance to take time to view the city at my own pace, calms me down and it’s free! Not to mention, walking allows me to take in the sounds of the city.
