Guten tag (good day)! This past month I got to witness the bustling food culture of Berlin. Berlin is a very international city, which means you get foods and fusions you wouldn't typically see in other German cities!
For breakfast, I go to a bakery and pick up fresh, crisp and warm croissants alongside butter and cheese. There's a bakery on nearly every corner in my neighborhood so I've gotten to try different ones each time!
Speaking of finding something on every block, a recent staple of Berlin is Asian fusion foods. I get excited thinking about food cultures merging, and these Asian restaurants are a very modern example. For example I tried a miso soup with udon (thick wheat noodles), enoki (thin white mushrooms), ginger, seaweed and cilantro. That's a Japanese-Korean-Vietnamese fusion dish! It tastes savory, salty and sweet all in one.
On the outskirts of Berlin in a suburb called Friedrischagen, you'll easily find traditional German food being served from the deli. I tried sauerkraut with haschee. Sauerkraut (pronounced sour-krout) is a fermented white cabbage. It of course, got it's name for tasting very sour! Haschee is a minced beef meat with a hearty and savory taste. It has the slight scent of onions, and goes well with roasted potatoes.
