Hello! My name is Cardin Chung and I'm 22 years old. I grew up in the PNW (Pacific Northwest) between my small hometown, Longview, Washington, and the neighboring big city, Portland, Oregon. From a young age, I was surrounded by art. Bouncing between the two cities exposed me to different kinds of music, dance, theater, and animation. At the same time, I also loved computer programming. For a long time, I thought I would have to choose between being an artist and being an engineer.
When I was 18, I went to college at the University of Southern California to study dance. While I was there, I also explored jazz music, animation, and electrical engineering. Throughout college, I became interested in finding ways to combine these different interests through interactive art. For example, I made a glove that responded to hand movements by making music. I also helped create a wall that produced different sounds when you pushed into it. Creating interactive art makes me really happy. I get to be both an engineer and an artist, while making experiences that bring people together and inspire curiosity and fun.
Now I am on a U.S. Fulbright Research Grant to continue exploring the relationship between interactive technology and art in Berlin, Germany. I'm currently working with the local dance and technology scene to develop new wearable technologies that can follow and respond to dance movements. I'm really grateful to have you along for the ride, and I'm super excited to share my adventures in Germany with you all!
