I journeyed all the way from Boston to Guayaquil! I stopped off in Quito (the capitol of Ecuador) for two days to attend a meeting. After my short time in Quito, I flew straight to Guayaquil. The time zone in Ecuador is only one hour different from Boston, MA, which is great because I did not experience jet lag.
I traveled by plane to arrive in Guayaquil last Monday. The plane from Quito was tiny in comparison to the plane I took from the United States to Quito. Other than talking walks, I explored the city a bit more when my host family took me on a drive around Samborondón.
I love exploring new places by walking around, so I mostly traveled by foot this week. It takes be about half an hour to walk to the university where I am working, which is a perfect amount of time to warm up for the day.
Although my time in Quito was short, I had some time to explore the city. I went on a walk to la Basílica del Voto Nacional, which is a large Roman Catholic church in the center of Quito. At 115 meters tall, it is the largest neo-Gothic basilica in the Americas. I was impressed not only by the height, but also by the beautiful stained glass windows.
