A view of Guayaquil in the distance from Isla Santay. This island has lots of mangroves that people are working hard to restore and protect.
There is a lot of garbage around the mangroves of Isla Santay. It can feel helpless knowing that the tide constantly brings in trash from the nearby city. What can we do to change this problem that seems so constant?
"If you want to see wildlife, look at the forest and do not make noise." Sometimes helping wildlife means doing nothing at all (not making noise, not disturbing the animals).
At other times, it is clear that action needs to be taken. Lots of people must come together to clean up mangroves such as this forest on Isla Puna.
This past week was my first time visiting Isla Puna. To get there, I took a city bus, a regional bus, a boat, a truck, and a canoe.
Local people depend on this mangrove forest for food and other resources, but the forests are threatened by shrimp farms and illegal activity.
"Mangrove area in sustainable and custodial use/ Association of ancestral and artisanal fisher users". Communities on Isla Puna are trying to protect the mangroves by coming together to form associations.
Seeing all of the threats that mangroves face can be very sad, but it motivates me to want to do something to help! Here is a picture of a trash clean-up I participated in with many different universities throughout Guayaquil.
