Backpacking

I took a night cruise on the river bed, watched horse-drawn carriages and went on a series of city tours. If you're ever traveling, I highly recommend booking a free city tour through Walkative! It functions on a "pay what you want" system, so there's no standard for what you need to pay. That being said, the average is around 18 euro.

I did two tours while in Poland, the first was through the remnants of the Jewish ghetto in Krakow, leftover from the Holocaust. This tour was sobering. We walked through the sites where schools, synagogues and orphanages used to be while the guide described the encroachment of Nazi soldiers. By the end of German occupation during WWII, the number of Jews in Kraków went from more than 65,000 to around 2,000. More than half of the survivors were able to escape due to Oskar Schindler's list and his factories in Poland. There's a famous Spielberg movie about Schindler and his aid during the Holocaust in Kraków that I recommend. Though, if you watch it, keep in mind that while it is largely historically accurate, parts of it have been sanitized for Hollywood, as with most movies. I also recommend looking into the real history of Kraków. In addition to the genocide, this tour also took us through Jewish heritage and cultural sites. Our tour guide said that it was important to see that Jewish community, language and culture is still alive in the city, because it is a representation of who won in the end.

After Kraków, I paid 14 euro to take a 10-hour FLIX south to Budapest, Hungary. As much as I wish I could tell you about my journey in full, I'm currently writing this from the bus at around 1:00 a.m. CEST from somewhere in Slovakia as we drive to Hungary. So, nothing to report yet, but I'll keep you posted.
