Australia’s Favorite Cuddly Animal: Koalas

Where does it live?:

Northern Koalas live primarily in the north in Queensland, where I'm located, and in New South Wales. Southern Koalas live more in Southern Australia and amongst Victoria's borders. Some even live in the Outback, but still close to Queensland and the eastern side. They inhabit in tall trees with eucalytptus for diet and lifestyle purposes.

How does it use its environment to survive?:

Since koalas live in high trees amongst eucalyptus, they mainly diet on these gum leaves. They eat around 50 kinds of eucalyptus. Did you know that eucalyptus is poisonous for humans and most animals to eat? -Koalas are able to digest eucalyptus since they have a fiber-digesting organ that allows them to safely munch on these leaves with no risks!

What can harm this creature or plant? Are we worried about it?:

Unfortunately, koalas are endangered due to habitat loss, deforestation, diseases and climate change. Since deforestation and climate change severely affect the supply of eucalytpus, their diet and food supply is threatened. Furthermore, koalas are also a bit picky since they choose to eat only 50 diffferent kinds of eucalyptus. This may seem like a lot, but they're limited to eating 50 eucalyptus out of nearly 700 eucalyptus options they have. This makes it more difficult for them to have the food supply needed for their diet.

Fortunately, the Australia Zoo and various wildlife sancturaries are working together to spread awareness and practice conservation to increase the koala population by providing them safe homes, rehabilitating them when injured in the wild and growing eucalyptus for them to eat.
