Australia’s Favorite Cuddly Animal: Koalas

Introduction:

When most people think of Australian native animals, most people think of kangaroos or koalas. I wanted to share some fun facts about koala's since they are my favorite Australian animal. Did you know that koalas sleep around 18 hours a day and up to 22 hours? They only spend about two hours each day being active, which includes them mainly eating, pooping, and climbing around the trees.

What does this creature or plant look like?:

Koalas are typically viewed as smaller, gray animals that cuddle with trees, right? Well, I learned that there are two main distinctions between northern koalas and southern koalas. Southern koalas typically are larger and have brownish fur compared to the sterotypical koala seen in the North, which are smaller and have gray fur. All koalas have white fur bellies and are fluffy!

How did I feel when I saw it?:

I was thrilled to see a koala for the first time because I've never seen one before coming to Australia. By now, I've seen them on three seperate occasions. I saw them at the Australia Zoo, the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and even once in nature on a walk up high in the trees! I bought a koala stuffed animal from the Australia Zoo that was named Keema, but I nicknamed her "Crikey" after the famous motto Steve Irwin used to say.
