Jaipur Foot: Helping Amputees

Introduction:

Jaipur Foot is an organization working nationally and internationally to improve the lives of amputees. Having developed low-cost yet effective medical technologies, the organization has been able provide millions of patients with life-changing devices and prosthetics.

What community need did I learn about?:

An amputee is a person who has had part of a leg or arm amputated, or removed. Amputees are found around the world, but amputation can be a particularly difficult condition for people in developing countries because of the cost of solutions and the reduced availability of medical care.

Why does the community have this need?:

Amputations often occur following injuries, accidents and infections. When a severe injury or vehicle accident happens, part or all of a limb may be removed to prevent further medical problems. An amputation can be life-saving, but it can be also be a difficult adjustment. With a crucial part of one's body missing, it can be a struggle an amputee to walk, find work and provide for his or her family.

Is this need being met? How?:

Jaipur Foot is a non-governmental organization where I live. Their work focuses on amputees who have lost part or all of their leg by providing prosthetic, or artificial, limbs. While prosthetics in the U.S.
