Trains, Trams, and Buses, oh my!

Introduction:

What's your favorite way to travel? Do you like the hustle and bustle of the subway, or do you prefer to sit and stare out the window on a bus? One of the best parts of living in a big city is that you have lots of options! While Ekaterinburg isn't as big as New York City, there are still one and a half million people who live here. Naturally, there's a big public transportation system to accommodate all those people.

How do people get around?:

In Ekaterinburg, there are buses, minibuses, trams, trolleybuses, taxis and a metro line (only one though!). You probably know what a bus is, and a minibus is just a smaller version. However, you might be wondering how trams and trolleybuses differ. Trams run on tracks that are built into the road, like train tracks. Both trams and trolleybuses are powered by electricity, rather than gasoline. Therefore, there are systems of power lines that run above the road where there are trams and trolleybuses. While this type of transportation takes more work to set up, electricity is cleaner than gasoline, so it's better for the environment.

To move between cities, there are also multiple options. You can fly on a plane, ride buses or take overnight trains. Inter-city trains are much more popular in Russia than in the U.S.
