How Russia Has Made Me More Fashionable

Russians wear a lot of scarves. It's both practical and a way to beautify your wardrobe. This is my friend Olga and me both wearing Russian scarves!
Here I am walking on the Volga, one of Russian's longest rivers! It gets cold enough that the river completely freezes over and its safe to walk on. Russians wear these wool boots called "valenki" because they keep your feet super warm.
Check out all these cool handmade knit hats! You can often find really unique handmade items here at markets. Since you need a lot of different types of clothing depending on the weather, it gives you a lot of opportunities to wear something different.
Since the weather here changes so often, people have clothes and shoes that are suited toward one particular type of weather. For example, these boots are rain boot material, but still fashionable! I've definitely never seen anything like this back home.
Sometimes I'm so in awe by Russian sense of fashion that I take pictures. This woman's coat and hat were just too unique not to remember.
In Russia, going to the ballet is an occasion, so everyone dresses up! Tickets also tend to be a lot more reasonably priced here, so going to the ballet or theatre is a lot more accessible than in the US.
Since Russians tend to dress up more than Americans, I always start to expand what kinds of clothes I wear when I'm here. This skirt is a new style for me, and I actually got it in a secondhand store -- it's a Soviet skirt from the 1980s!
Furry hats are both warm and fun! I also was able to find this one secondhand and it makes a lot more enjoyable to take walks in the colder weather.
