Food Waste

Then, after the bags are filled, you must throw away the bags in a special communal location, where you are further charged for the amount of food waste you produced. Food waste iincludes anything from banana peels, chicken bones, or even rotten food. The tax revenue collected from the food waste is used to handle getting rid of the food waste. Once the food waste is collected, the liquids are removed and the rest is then burned and discarded.

The tax on the food waste makes Koreans more aware of how much food they eat, and makes people living in Korea more careful about what they buy. This mindset has also affected other areas of waste such as recycling trash. For example, in my own homestay, there are separate bins for trash, plastic, paper and cans. This is separated so our house's trash collection can be better managed.

Why does the community have this need?:

Korea is a small country, but it has a high population. Because of this, human waste is a very important health concern. During Korea’s early development, trash and pollution were both major concerns for public health. So, in order to make Korea a cleaner country, the government has taken steps to reduce and better handle the pollution caused by residents.

Is this need being met? How?:

Yes, the Korean government and Korean citizens have both taken steps to reduce Korea's waste. Laws forbid food waste to be dumped in landfills, and liquid food waste cannot be dumped into the ocean. Additionally many homes compost their own food waste. Cameras make sure the Koreans properly deal with throwing away their trash.
