All's Fair in "German" Fare

These men and women at first came from Italy seeking a better life in the West German economy, and with their dreams of a new start these workers brought foods that Germans had never experienced before, like pizza, lasange and spaghetti. Into the 1980s and 1990s, these workers came from Turkey and brought with them falafels, pita and kebabs. As a result, today Germans practically consider pizza and kebabs to be part of their own national foods.

With all these changes to the culture, you will find very few German restaurants even in Germany. I have even talked with older Germans who remember the days when German foods were practically all you could eat in Germany. "We like it better this way," one woman told me. "Besides, it is good to know you always have your own culture's food whenever you eat at home."  Germans have opened themselves to cultures other than their own in the realm of food and drink.
