During the Inca Empire, towns used to communicate by sending runners called chasqis, who could cover long distances by running all day. Many of their paths are still used by farmers today to access their remote fields or cow pastures. Being born and raised at these high altitudes, locals are immune to altitude sickness (up to a certain point), and they have knowledge of many medicinal plants that help them walk tirelessely.
Nowadays, in the fields and in the cities, people are adapting in other ways to new challenges. In the face of climate change and its effects, people are organizing to promote awareness of the issues and take action through reforestation, wildfire prevention, and stream cleanups. Farmers are adapting by changing what they grow, as higher temperatures allow for different crops to be planted in the area.
