The main languages spoken here are Spanish and Guarani, and Paraguay is officially a bilingual country. Guarani is one of the most widely spoken indigenous languages in the world., as it survived the colonization by Spain, whereas all of Paraguay's neighbors no longer speak Guarani or any other indigenous language. Spanish is more commonly spoken in the capital and other big cities, in schools and in order to conduct business, whereas Guarani is considered the language of people's hearts, and is spoken more in rural areas, in the home and at family gatherings. As Guarani is not related to Spanish or any other romance languages, its words and pronunciations are distinct and difficult for outsiders to learn.
The currency in Paraguay are called guaranis, too. One U.S. dollar is equivalent to about 7,000 Guaranis. The bills used here are 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000,and 100,000 notes. The coins are 50 (never used), 100, 500 and 1,000. A credit card is also widely accepted in most places, especially in the city.
This depends a lot on the place, but I usually pay 4,000 guaranis for a two liter bottle of water, which is about 60 cents in U.S dollars.
