¡Buen provecho! Food in Colombia

However, because we have a very good growing climate here (not too hot or too cold), most fincas also grow fruits and vegetables. Some common ones include oranges, bananas and avocados.

On Sundays, there is a small farmers’ market in my town. There are typically two fruit and vegetable vendors who set up in the plaza. Most people go there to buy all of their fruits and vegetables for the week. It is relatively cheap to buy fresh fruits and vegetables, and that way, you know that they are all coming from nearby.

As a result, the food that is eaten and the food that is available to buy is very seasonal. For example, during the season for mangoes, you can find mangoes everywhere. But, for the rest of the year, they are much more difficult to find. Learning to eat and cook seasonally was initially a bit of a challenge for me, but I have really enjoyed learning more about where the food I eat every day comes from.
