The Wellington Community

  • In 1902, the Wellington City Council opened its first library.
  • In 1937, Ngati Poneke young Maori club was created as a place for the Maori population in Wellington to meet.
  • In 1950, New Zealand's first Greek Orthodox church was built in Wellington.
  • In 1979, Wellington hosted its first women's rights march with "Reclaim the Night." (New Zealand is also famous for their progressive women's rights, being the first country in the world to give women the right to vote in 1893!)
  • In 1997, one of the most iconic movie series': The Lord of the Rings was filmed in New Zealand.  Many scenes are filmed in Wellington, and this, in a sense, put Wellington on the map through the world of film.

Why does the community have this need?:

As the city grew Wellington became a central hub with a constantly growing population. The city makes everyone feel safe, helped by the fact that Wellingtonians seem to be the friendliest people that I have ever met. Since Wellington is the country's capital, different community needs are often shown through demonstrations, legislation, and strikes.

Is this need being met? How?:

While the citizens have the right to speak, the process of implementing new changes is often slow.  For example, the political administration is currently working on meeting needs from different communities within Wellington.
