There are many types of couscous, but normally it comes with vegetables, chicken, sweet raisins and a sauce of broth. Often it is served with laban, which is a buttermilk drink.
Since I was on a yoga retreat this week, we actually made our own music with Moroccan instruments like the darbouka and the bendir, which are both drums. We played the instruments while we chanted our yoga mantras!
The yoga retreat was a lot of fun this week! We practiced yoga every day for four days while admiring a view of the Atlas mountains. From our eco-lodge, we could see Mount Toubkal, which is the highest peak in Morocco! During this trip, I also met many other Moroccans and foreigners living in Morocco. We spoke English, French, Arabic and Spanish together.
I read two books during my yoga retreat! One of them was called, "A House in Fez." Fez is a large city in Morocco with a rich culture and history. The story was about an Australian woman named Suzanna who fell in love with the city of Fez and decided to buy a very old house in the historic center of Fez. Historic neighborhoods in Moroccan cities are called medinas and old houses in the medinas are called riads. Suzanna bought a riad in the Fez medina and repaired it with the help of many Moroccan friends in Fez. People from Fes are called Fassis.
