This week was hot and humid! It cooled down to a comfortable sleeping temperature overnight, which is good since some of the places we stayed had no air conditioning. During the day, we tried to stay in the shade, swim, or do indoor activities during the heat of the afternoon.
I saw many colorful birds and fish, including a barracuda, three sea turtles, a tarantula, a scorpion (in my bedroom- yikes!), a fox, two bats, many lizards, coatis, six species of Mayan bees, sting rays, baby turtles, and too many mosquitos. We also stayed next to a farm, so we saw domesticated pigs and chickens one morning.
The coolest thing I saw in nature this week were the three green sea turtles eating underwater seagrasses. These grasses grow only in very specific environments, and Akumal, Mexico, happens to be one of them. The sea turtles live there year-round and will lay their eggs there from April-October.
