They were filled with the spirit to fight for justice. So it goes to show that there are two sides to every stereotype.
Stereotypes generally have some truth to them. But one thing I have learned so far in Guatemala is that there are always counter-examples to these stereotypes. Some countries are dangerous, but there will always be people who care about safety. Some governments are corrupt, but people will always look for better solutions. And some people would like to forget their history, but historical memory will always remain in some people's hearts.
