Hola everyone! Whenever you visit a new country, it is important to be open to understanding why people live the way they do. Whether you are a tourist or a researcher, having this attitude will open many doors for you, as you will learn about how other people see the world. For example, my idea of what is "common sense" may be different from a Guatemalan person's idea of "common sense" in a particular situation. It is careful to realize some of the assumptions we make about a particular culture and to recognize a sterotype when we see it. Sometimes there is truth to the stereotype, but, very often, you will see a counter-example that proves you were wrong.
Today I will tell you about some of the assumptions I carried with me into Guatemala. As you read this, keep in mind that my assumptions often had counter-examples that point to the opposite being true. I want you to ask yourselves what assumptions you have about other countries and cultures? And now think about some examples that contradict your assumptions. Now for some examples from my own experience, here in Guatemala.
