Chocolate In Antigua!

This is far from the Hershey's "kisses" we are accustomed to in other parts of the world. But this chocolate drink is rich and flavorful. If you like the dark or bitter taste of chocolate, then this is the drink for you!

How did I feel when I tried it?:

When I first drank the chocolate drink, I had to pause for a second and really admire the richness and boldness of the flavor. It is the opposite of the sugary rather than chocolately drinks that we are used to having in America. Instead, the bitterness and spices in the drink have a real kick! I have tried this drink during the Christmas holidays in Guatemala. I also tried a form of chocolate drink in Rabinal. Do you remember the chilate I had? That was also a chocolate drink, except that one had corn in it too!

It felt awesome to be able to drink something that was so historically important to Guatemalans! Chocolate drink was part of the pre-Hispanic Mayans' diet. Most Mayans had there chocolate with water and chili, but royal leaders had a special version in which they mixed in honey. I mostly enjoy dark chocolate, so this was an excuse to enjoy it in the form of a drink! Guatemalan chocolate is unique and bitter, and is an interesting culinary experience. When I drank the chocolate drink during Christmas time, or with friends, I felt very jolly and warm. Drinking chocolate calls for celebration and enjoying time with friends and family.

How is the food prepared?:

in many ways, cacao is prepared similarly to the way a coffee bean is prepared.  But cacao and coffee are not the same thing, and they have different flavors.
