Traveling Through West Africa

Journal Entry:

Hello, everyone!

I am so excited to be back with you! Be sure to check out my postcard from Dakar, Senegal!

My journey to Senegal inspired me to write about what it is like to fly outside of Ghana and to other places in West Africa. West Africa is, as the name suggests, a region of the African continent. There are around 15 countries in West Africa, including Ghana and Senegal. (Check out this map!) By flying to Senegal, I could see how Ghana is different from the countries that are near it.

It takes four hours to fly from Ghana to Senegal, so, I took a nap on the plane, using my head wrap to warm my arms. (International planes can get cold!) As we flew closer to the Sahara Desert, the landscape turned brown and sandy outside my window. The airline served a delicious meal of spaghetti, corn, carrots and sweets as the sun set.

In Ghana, people speak English. We also know that some Ghanaians speak Dagbanli. But once I landed in Senegal, I stepped into a world of French and Wolof, a West African language. That made getting around tougher than how I was used to. For example, at the border, I gave my passport for checking to a security guard dressed in dark green. He asked me something in French. I waved my hand and shook my head. “Je ne parle pas français,” I said.
