There was so much vibrancy, with plenty of clothing shops and little restaurants. The town also has a large Garifuna population, so it was in the middle of getting ready and decorating for the upcoming Settlement Day celebrations and the adults’ Battle of the Drums competition. I also got to catch up with a friend who lives there.

This week, I saw a lot of black, yellow, and white. Those are the traditional Garifuna colors as represented on the flag. Most students have to wear uniforms to school, which consist of these three colors. At cultural and formal events, girls often wear dresses and boys wear dashikis made of these colors. For the events I went to this week, the outfits were a centerpiece of pride. Participants donned their finest matching dresses and dashikis
