Generally, biking is my favorite since it's usually the fastest, and I like getting exercise. When I take public transit (typically only if it's raining or snowing), I usually ride the buses (since the lines go very close to my house). When traveling to the university, however, I often also take the Straßenbahn (trolley). I definitely prefer the Straßenbahn over the buses because the ride is faster and smoother. I also think the Straßenbahn cars look a lot cooler. I usually only use the trains for regional travel to neighboring cities like Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, and Koblenz. Although I like the trains themselves, I am constantly frustrated with their frequent delays and cancellations.
German ways of getting around are definitely connected to the culture and the environment. Part of why Germans take public transit and bike so much is because of widespread concerns over climate change. Individuals are generally encouraged to avoid driving, and public transit is highly subsidized (the government pays most of the cost rather than the riders). Biking is also encouraged by the presence of so many bike lanes, most of which are pretty well-maintained. In general, biking is also safer than in American cities because it's so much more common, and most drivers are accustomed to stopping for bikers and staying out of bike lanes. Germans also generally care more about staying physically fit (obesity rates are lower, and exercise is more built into people's daily routines).
