Navigating Malaysia

Introduction:

As I mentioned in my first post, I live in Malaysia in a small town of about 5,000 people. With such a small population, most restaurants, grocery stores and shops are located in town. Luckily for me, my house is just outside of town, which means I can walk anywhere I need to go. Our two grocery stores are 10- to 15-minute walks from home, and my school is less than a five minute walk from home. While I choose to walk, there are other ways to get around town. Read on to find out how people get where they need to be in Tenom.

How do people get around?:

While it is easy to get around town by walking, it is always so hot here that you work up quite a sweat in 15 minutes. As a result, many people use air-conditioned cars to get around. The cars in Malaysia actually do not have a setting for heat. They only have air conditioning!

A second option for getting around is a motorbike. Motorbikes are perfect for driving through uneven terrain, as many backroads in Tenom are unpaved and rocky. It is not uncommon to see three or four people crammed on a motorbike.

Tenom also has an old boxcar train that transports people to several towns north of here. The boxcar train has three cars, one with seats and two without seats. If you do not get a seat, you sit or stand in the open car, which can be uncomfortable if you are on the train for a long time.
