Have you ever sat down at a carne asada (barbeque) and realized that you are fulfilling a tradition? From the music that plays, to the food that you eat, everybody’s family has their own way of doing things. There are some notable differences. For example, some uncles will hand out samples of the carne (meat) while they cook, while others smack just about anybody who tries to get some before everything is ready. There is also some common ground that reveals the importance of this tradition. The person grilling has music playing or conversation flowing, making it clear that this is a relaxing event where everyone is supposed to connect. The people who do not grill bring their own side dishes, desserts and drinks from home because we value bringing something to the table. Sometimes, we ask the hosts if we can invite people they do not know because we want to help our friends make more friends. All in all, these events are more than what they might look like to an outsider. They are opportunities to strengthen your community and make it grow!
