East Asia's Religions: Buddhism

Introduction:

Buddhism may be nothing like you've ever learned about before. This religion works with its own unique rules and has different beliefs than some other religions. One example is the concept of reincarnation. Wow, that's a strange, big word, right? Reincarnation means that after you die, you will be born again. It could happen that you are reborn as a human, but you may also become a frog, a rabbit, a millionaire, or maybe a princess or even a dinosaur! Buddhism believes in things that are different from religions like Christianity. It'll be difficult to explain everything about Buddhism in this article. Since this is a lot of information, I'd like to ask you all to bring any questions you're curious about to your teacher after you've read this article. As Buddhism may be a very new topic to some, we'll start with a story on how Buddhism was founded, what its main beliefs are, how it travelled to Japan and how it is connected to the environment.

What tradition did I learn about?:

I’ve learned about Buddhism in Japan. This is a religion that is a bit hard to explain, but in this religion, we have no god. So, what do you believe in when there’s no god? Let’s start with a story in India. Long long ago, there was a king who met a prophet. This prophet told King Suddhodana that his son, Gautama Siddharta, will either become a great ruler or a great spiritual leader.
