East Asia's Religions: Buddhism

A Buddha is a person who ‘woke up’ from life’s suffering. It’s not an invincible person who can no longer become sick or old. A Buddha is someone who no matter what happens to them is at peace. Buddhism is a religion made as a solution to life’s suffering. The Buddha, Gautama Siddhartha, then teaches the steps of this solution to your suffering. We call these steps The 8-fold Path. After becoming a Buddha, Siddhartha devoted his whole life to helping others "wake up" to.

In many religions, people believe in a god but it's a bit different in Buddhism. Then, what do people believe in? We still can believe in gods. We call them deities. In Christianity, you pray to god to forgive you for your sins. In Buddhism, you can pray to a god but not to go to heaven or forgive you for your sins. In fact, we have many types of gods. For example, you may pray to the god of fortune for good luck with money and to reach enlightenment. In Buddhism, we can also pray to a god for help with life and enlightenment. Although people can pray in both religions, Buddhists pray for different reasons.

There is a word you may all know and use that is a main belief In Buddhism, karma. Karma is the belief where what you do will come back for you. This can be something good. For example, you could donate money to a charity. This is a very kind thing to do. One day, something kind will come back because you did this. This is karma. On the flip side, it can also be something bad. If I stole my brother’s toy on purpose, I will have bad karma. In the future, maybe someone may steal my bike. You can have good and bad karma. The closest thing to karma may be a Christian phrase you all might've heard before,”you reap what you sow.
