Taiwan Through My Students' Eyes

What would you like to be when you grow up?:

Luca wants to be a scientist, Sherry wants to be a translator and Gaby wants to be a teacher. Selena and Lydia want to be police officers. Zoey wants to be a dance teacher, and Sophia wants to be a flight attendant. Andy said he still needs to think about it.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?:

Zoey would go to South Korea and Andy would go to Japan. Selena, Sophia and Sherry also said Japan and South Korea. Japanese and South Korean media are very popular in Taiwan, especially with young people, so I’m not surprised by those answers at all! Lydia and Gaby said they would go to China, and Luca would go to the U.S.

What do you know or think about the United States?:

Zoey and Selena both said they think the U.S. is snowy, which is probably in part because of all the photos I’ve shown my students of what Iowa looks like right now! Lydia said Americans have good facial structure, and Sherry said Americans have special eyes. I’ve noticed a lot of Taiwanese people, especially young people, think Americans are very good-looking. I think there’s two main reasons for this: First, ‘beauty standards’ can be very different across different countries, and many common physical features among Americans align with what many Taiwanese people think is beautiful. Also, many Taiwanese people, especially in rural areas like where I live, have mostly seen Americans on TV. So when they picture Americans, they picture actors and actresses! Luca said he thinks the U.S. has 52 states, which is a pretty close guess for a Taiwanese student! Can you guess how many counties Taiwan has?
