While half of the students on my study abroad program focus, like me, on art history and languagethe other half concentrate on classes related to food and sustainability. When we all spend time together, we have been eagerly sharing what we've learned with each other in our different lessons! Recently, the food students learned about mushrooms and vegetables, so they decided to make risotto, a rice dish, with a vegetable sauce. They also added roasted fresh vegetables on the side, showcasing their latest learnings. Almost all of our food was locally sourced from Siena thanks to their recent explorations and the local markets.
We had risotto (an Italian rice dish) with a vegetable sauce and sausage. We also had roasted vegetables, which included asparagus, potatoes and mushrooms. In addition, we had crostini — a hardened bread.
I was very excited! It smelled amazing even while they were cooking. While eating our meal, all the food tasted so fresh! Even the sausage came from a local farm, giving us a taste of an authentic Siena. Eating in our group made it even more fun. It was a meal filled with talking, laughing and fantastic food!
