'At Home' in a New Place

In México there are a lot of new experiences for me, related to language, cultural traditions, food, and weather, and my process of integration is happening in a bunch of little pieces.

Firstly, a really important way I connect with others is through language, by sharing ideas and feelings. Learning Spanish has always been really important to me. I have been studying Spanish for around 12 years, but just like in the U.S., most of the phrases used between friends (amigos) are not taught in school. These modismos (terms) can be tricky keep track of, so I have been keeping a notebook with me at all times to jot down new sayings and words, any questions I may have, and later, to practice my vocabulary. I have also set a goal to talk as much as I can in Spanish, which means introducing myself to new people and always asking for additional suggestions or even directions on the street. The best thing about this practice is that I have been able to meet cool people and make a lot of new friends.

I have also set a goal to say "yes" to as many things as I can. Although sometimes it is nice to relax at home in my hammock, it's also important to go meet new people. Almost everyone I have met in México has been so kind and excited to share parts of their lives and culture with me. I got to swim in a hidden lagoon with my friend’s family, watch the sunset from the back of a truck while driving down from the mountains, dance to traditional folk music (only slightly off-beat) and laugh for hours as I helped cook handmade empanadas with my neighbors.
